A new study in the science journal Nature shows that a protein deposit called ASC may be partially to blame as a starting cause of Alzheimer’s disease. This ASC deposit is left over from inflammation in the brain and body earlier in life, suggesting a snowball effect of a minor illness could lead to brain degeneration later on. To prove that ASC was a culprit in the development of Alzheimer’s, scientists organized a study with mice where they seeded some of the test subjects with the ASC protein, but not others. Those who had their brain seeded with this protein showed greater progression of that species’ version of the disease.<\/p>\n
