It’s official, the bumblebee has been added to the endangered species list

April 15, 2017 By Darrell Miller

There have been warnings for years that the bumblebee population was declining, in fact the bee population has gone down by 90 percent. This could be catastrophic because bee pollination is vital to many crops and their loss would decimate our food supple. After a postponement by the Trump Administration, the bumblebee has been placed in the endangered species list and is effective March 21st. Read on for more information to the vital role that bees play in our ecosystem.

Key Takeaways:

  • -The threats facing bees and bumblebees are a loss of habitat, diseases and parasites, pesticides, and climate change.
  • -Over the last two decades, the bee’s numbers have plummeted by nearly 90 percent.
  • -If we were to lose the pollination services provided by native insects (mostly bees), we’d be spending around $3 billion per year in the United States.
