What Is Magnesium Malate, and Does It Have Benefits?

September 21, 2019 By Darrell Miller

Magnesium, a mineral that plays an essential role in your health, is found naturally in a variety of foods. However, determining which type of a magnesium supplement may be difficult. Magnesium Malate is a compound of magnesium and malic acid–an acid found in many fruits. One study in rats found that magnesium malate provided the best absorption when compared with other supplements. Uses for magnesium supplements range from preventing and treating migraines to promoting regular bowel movements, by drawing water into the intestines. Magnesium has also been used to treat depression since the 1920’s, and may be effective in elevating your mood, rather than an antidepressant. Other studies indicate that it may reduce chronic pain. However, potential side effects can occur, especially when taken in high doses.

Key Takeaways:

  • Magnesium malate is an easily absorbable form of magnesium often found in tart fruits.
  • Magnesium malate is used in the treatment of migraines, depression, and chronic pain.
  • Magnesium malate can even be used in place of an antacid to help alleviate heartburn and stomach upset.

“Magnesium malate is a compound made by combining magnesium with malic acid.”
