I Have Bone Loss, My Doctor Tells Me to Take Boron, Why?

March 2, 2011 By Darrell Miller

Boron And Bone Health

We used to know little about the role of boron in maintaining human health, but studies in the latter half of the 20th century point to its homeostatic effects that influence chemical compounds present in hormones and bones. Today medical professionals take into account the significance of boron in preventing age-related bone loss, and supplementation of this dietary element has been in use to treat post-menopausal women at risk of osteoporosis. Populations who are able to take advantage of plant produce yielded from soils with healthy quantities of boron have shown to have lower incidence of arthritis and bone loss.

Helps with Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis

Boron is a trace mineral both in plants and animals. We need this in minute quantities to support healthy functioning of organs and tissues. A well balanced diet contains healthy amounts of this dietary mineral, but, supplementation has also been proven to affect the human health. In some places where the soil has poor concentrations of boron, it is possible to develop deficiency in boron, albeit rare. Not surprisingly, individuals who have shown healthy levels of boron in the body has reduced risk of developing arthritis due to wear and tear of the joints, or osteoarthritis, and bone loss that results in osteoporosis. The good thing is boron supplements have shown effects on health similar to those we get from the foods we eat, and this have been observed to reverse bone loss problems.

Boron And Hormone Production

Stimulates Releases of Hormones for Bone Health

One important physiological activity that boron participates in is the releases of the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. These steroid hormones are in fact pivotal endogenous compounds implicated in the process of bone formation. Significant amounts of androgenic hormones in the blood, testosterone in particular, produce anabolic effects, meaning it affects bone density and maturation as well as muscle mass and strength. Estrogen acts on the same principle by inducing the process that controls the formation of bones. These hormones are produced by both the male and female bodies, and work hand in hand in promoting bone health and protecting it against the process of aging. This is the reason why boron supplementation plays a synergistic role in conjunction with hormone replacement therapy not only in treating women diagnosed with osteoporosis but also to prevent age-related bone loss.

Interferes with Excretions of Minerals from Bones

There are several factors that lead to bone porosity characteristic of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. For one, bone formation is a constant process even after bone materials have been completely laid down in all the bones of our body. The bones are the single important calcium stores for our body, and thus excretions of calcium to meet the needs of the rest of the body results from the process of bone resorption taking place throughout our lives. Truth is immobility associated with sedentary lifestyle contributes to bone resorption. That’s why supplementation is a precautionary measure against bone loss, and boron is one of the minerals proven to promote bone health.
