Researchers from two London-based institutes of higher learning have revealed new findings about turmeric, an herb already widely recognized for an array of health-promoting properties. Most, if not all, of the properties are directly attributed to curcumin, a very potent, inherent component in turmeric. The latest London-based revelations assert that curcumin has scored again. Data shows the turmeric ingredient has a heretofore unacknowledged application in the disease glaucoma. Glaucoma is a highly serious eye condition, which when left untreated can escalate to total and irreversible blindness. The optic nerve is damaged due to fluid buildup in the eye. Although prior study has shown that orally administered curcumin could positively impact the negative progression, it’s now been shown that directly administering the ingredient in eye drops may be even more efficacious, as it absorbs more directly into the bloodstream.
Key Takeaways:
- There are a lot of ways in which turmeric can be used for treatment of things.
- Some people eyes are not good and this compound has been found to actually help them.
- To treat glaucoma, there have been tests done with derivatives of turmeric and its compound properties.
“Previous studies have shown that, when taken orally, curcumin can protect retinal nerves. However, this didn’t seem like the most appropriate way of administering curcumin since curcumin can’t readily dissolve in the body; so it would be hard for it to be absorbed in the bloodstream.”
