It has been found that people who drink diet sodas and use artificial sweeteners in their diets have a surprisingly higher rate of heart disease and diabetes than people who consume natural sweeteners. In addition, the diet soda drinkers are often obese.
Researchers from the University of Manitoba have noted that artificially-sweetened sodas do not correlate with weight loss. Conversely, they have found that sodas containing non-nutritive, artificial sweeteners seem to be associated with weight gain. There is still a good deal of speculation about the actual reasons for this, but the researchers have concluded that much more work needs to be done when taking into consideration the fact that more and more people are consuming foods containing various artificial sweeteners.
