How Vitamin C Helps in Fighting Cold

Vitamin C is a nutrient that your body needs to stay healthy. Most people attribute this nutrient as a means to fight common colds. Food items that are rich in Vitamin C include bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwifruit, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas, and papayas. Vitamin C was first used for common colds in the 70’s, however, there has been no proof that it can really help fight common colds.

 

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. It is one if the essential vitamins needed to keep your body strong and healthy. It is used to maintain blood vessels, muscles, and bones. It assists in the formation of collagen and can help in the absorption of iron in the body.  Vitamin C is naturally available in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits. It is also available as a dietary supplement.

Can Vitamin C really Control and Treat the Cold Symptoms?

Vitamin C has been studied for many years as a form of treatment and prevention of colds. However, results have been inconsistent.  According to experts, there are no or little benefits when you use Vitamin C for the prevention of colds.  Though it has been proven to reduce the number of days you actually get colds.  Vitamin C has been popularly used as a colds prevention vitamins after Linus Pauling published a book that states that taking mega doses of Vitamin C (18000 mg/day).

 

Vitamin C and Effects on Immune System

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. It is useful in the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen helps keep the skin healthy. Vitamin C is highly concentrated in the immune systems, this makes it easy to be used in times of infection. It is readily available in the form of fruits and vegetables and dietary supplements.
