Eating oranges can prevent you from going blind

October 17, 2018 By Darrell Miller

A fifteen year Australian study found that people who eat at least on serving of oranges per day are 60 percent less likely to develop macular degeneration, which can result in blindness. The lengthy study feature 2000 people, making it one of the world’s largest studies of this type. While oranges are known for being rich in flavonoids and vitamin C, most other flavonoid-containing foods do not demonstrate this level of benefit. While the exact causal relationship remains poorly understood, what is well documented is that macular degeneration is on the rise.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to Australian researchers, eating a minimum of one serving of oranges daily helps to prevent macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.
  • Researchers concluded that it is not the vitamin C in oranges that offer the protective eye health benefits and is more likely the flavonoids.
  • While there are studies that show a link between vitamins E, C, and A related to eye health, this is the first one to focus specifically on flavonoids in citrus.

“You’ve probably heard that eating oranges can help you ward off colds, but did you know that these tangy fruits can also help prevent blindness?”
