Omega-3s are a potent way to treat depression without resorting to dangerous prescription medications

December 4, 2020 By Darrell Miller

Omega-3 fatty acids are one of many natural options used to treat depression. Two ways that omega-3s help with depression are by decreasing the risk of neuro-inflammation and increasing the brain’s serotonin activity. In addition, omega-3s appear to block immune cells from allowing inflammatory cytokines to go to the brain. While EPA seems to be the most effective of the omega-3 fatty acids, scientists have not agreed on an optimal minimum dose. For the best results, take omega-3 supplements in divided doses with meals.

Key Takeaways:

  • Omega-3s can raise the activity of CNS seratonin, reduce the risk and severity of inflammation, and stop phosphatidyl-inositol from sending signals that bring about depressive moods.
  • Adding omega-3 fatty acids to ongoing treatments can increase the effectiveness of antidepressants.
  • Experts say that the goal should be to achieve a good ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s in the blood.

“Scientific research shows that the intake of omega-3 fatty acids in a diet influences the risk of depression.”
