Thirty new studies confirm it: Sweet drinks cause weight gain, obesity in children and adults – experts call for action to reduce consumption

January 11, 2018 By Darrell Miller

Sugar is known to cause many problems, but now there are thirty studies confirming the problems they cause, especially when it comes to weight gain and obesity. The studies took place worldwide and twenty of them were focused on children over adults, but they all come to same conclusion about sugar ingestion, especially when it comes to sugary sodas. This news, while not alarming, confirms many of the warnings that scientists, doctors and dietitians have been putting out for years.

Key Takeaways:

  • evidence confirms the link between obesity and sugary drinks, requiring a change in policy.
  • 66% of the studies reviewed focused explicitly on children, again, emphasizing the need to offer healthy beverage alternatives
  • next steps include researching methods to promote healthy drinking, holding food and beverage industries accountable, and conducting studies on specific communities to affect change

“Experts warn countries who have yet to do so that they must immediately take the necessary steps to minimize the consumption of these drinks since they are full of “empty calories.”
