A recently published study has produced surprising findings about the effect of a high-protein diet on a diabetic person’s blood sugar. Previously, it was believed that a diet that heavy in animal-based protein, e.g. meat and dairy, was not good for diabetics as it had a negative impact on their kidneys. However, researchers found that diets heavy in animal and plant-based protein did not spike their diabetic test subject’s blood sugar. In fact, the subjects who had plant protein-based diets had steady blood sugar levels and actually saw their kidney health improve over time.
While the researchers that conducted the study maintained that future inquiries must be made before any definitive conclusions can be drawn, there is still valuable insight to be gleamed from its findings. One of the leading causes of type II diabetes is obesity. And one of the leading causes of obesity the excessive consumption of unhealthy junk foods that are packed with saturated fats and refined grains. By exchanging the empty carbohydrates in your diet for properly portioned plant and animal protein rich foods, you cannot only lose weight, but you can also help prevent the development of diabetes later in life by keeping your kidneys strong and healthy.
