Healthy Snacking Do’s and Don’ts

February 5, 2016 By Corey B

When starting a new diet with the aim of losing weight, one of the trickier aspects to figure out is what you should snack on. Obviously, junk food like potato chips, cupcakes and ice cream should be avoided, but many snacks that are promoted as being “healthy” are not what they seem. For example, granola has been considered to be a quality healthy snack for many years, but the fat and sugar that makes it so flavorful may undermine your dieting efforts. Along similar lines, you should be wary about the fruit smoothies you drink. Many popular brands of smoothie are actually packed with excess sugar to improve flavor, so you want to look over that nutritional facts label very carefully.

As this Greatist article explains, when it comes to snacks, the best strategy is to find foods that are both nutritious and filling. For example, because of their high fat and fiber content almonds make an excellent snack. By the time your stomach breaks down a handful of almonds, it’ll be time for another meal. Porridge is another great snack idea. A bowl of steel cut oats, a few chopped up nuts for texture and a dab of honey for flavor will quickly quell your hunger pains.
