It’s Not Arthritis: Paget’s Disease (+ 5 Ways to Manage Symptoms of This Bone Disease)

Although Paget’s Disease of Bone may have similar symptoms to arthritis, they are two separate diseases with different causes. Paget’s Disease results from a defect in how the body replaces old bone tissue with new bone tissue, resulting in weakened and misaligned bones. The most common symptoms are painful, enlarged or damaged bones, but Paget’s can also damage joints and compress nerves. While there is no cure, a healthy diet rich in calcium, vitamins D and K2, and magnesium can be helpful for symptoms, as can exercise and physical therapy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease, followed by Paget’s Disease, named for surgeon and pathologist, Sir James Paget.
  • The normal process of replacing old bone tissue, with new bone tissue goes seriously awry when a person has Paget’s.
  • Sufferers can experience excessive bone growth, leading to large, misshapen bones, that are both fragile and brittle.

“These are two totally different bone diseases, but they can have similar symptoms and they can occur at the same time.”
