How humans and their gut microbes may respond to plant hormones

August 27, 2017 By Darrell Miller

A bowl of salad has a lot more in it than just vitamins and minerals. There are also remains of the hormones that plants produce to control many different functions they have. Scientists have recently reported that the microbes that live in our gut may actually respond to these hormones and produce similar molecules all on their own. It makes a lot of sense to investigate animal-microbe interactions from the point of view of plants.

Key Takeaways:

  • Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is essential for a healthy life.
  • Plant acids can be transformed into human hormones with help from our gut.
  • One theory is that humans and plants may have co evolved to respond to similar stimuli.

“Recently, scientists have reported that our gut microbes and cells may respond to these hormones and even produce similar molecules of their own.”
