Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate, are the “gold” produced by your gut bacteria when they ferment prebiotic fibers. They don’t just fuel your colon; they act as master regulators of how your body extracts and uses nutrition.

How SCFAs Improve Nutrient Absorption
