Recent study finds that low vitamin D levels are associated with increased disease activity in ulcerative colitis

July 20, 2016 By Corey B

In Riley Peterson’s article regarding vitamin D, she speaks of a recent study that found low vitamin levels may increase be related to colitis. She explains what colitis is and how it has very negative effects in the body as well as discomforting symptoms. She also explains that because vitamin D has effects of anti-inflammatory it can help with the discomfort from the colitis by making the bowel much less active.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a relapsing form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is characterized by chronic inflammation of the colon
  • Serum 25(OH)D levels may affect the mucosal inflammation found in UC
  • Vitamin D may play a role in disease activity among those with UC

“Research has also shown that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in both Crohn’s disease and UC.”
