Tips on How to Beat Stress Related Over Eating

Stress is bad for us for a number of reasons. It can raise our blood pressure, which can eventually lead to the development of ailments like hypertension. It can cause us to feel overly worried or sad, emotional states that, if they persist, can lead to the onset of serious anxiety disorders like depression. And, according to one recent study, stress can cause us to overeat. When we become stressed from pressure at work or because we were cut off in traffic suddenly, our bodies release large quantities of cortisol into our bloodstream. This chemical has the effect of disrupting the way our bodies process glucose. When that happens, our brains become convinced that our bodies desperately need calories, even if we’ve eaten recently.

Since over eating can lead to serious illnesses like obesity, it’s imperative that we find ways to stop stress from negatively affecting our eating habits. This Daily Beast article has a few tips on how to do just that. One useful technique is, when you feel yourself becoming stressed instead of seeking out relief in the form of a doughnut, drink some herbal tea instead.
