Climate Change and Nutrition: ‘Junk Food Effect’ Is Making Crops Nutrient Deficient

October 25, 2017 By Darrell Miller

The world’s population is rapidly increasing. The problem with this increase is the fact that our nutrition density in food is decreasing. This inverse relationship will cause severe malnutrition issues in years to come. Climate change is giving crops a junk food effect. The carbon emissions being put in the air is directly affecting the ground and the food. Farmers need to take a non-GMO approach to restore this sugar-to-nutrient ratio. As the pollution increases, food nutrition will continue to disrupt; therefore, permaculture’s need to be considered to reduce carbon dioxide in the overall atmosphere and to return the nutrition ratio in food. Individuals need to cut down on emissions by recycling and finding cleaner methods of energy use. Overall, the population must preserve the environment and be eco-friendly before food nutrition is disrupted and the atmosphere is further polluted.

Key Takeaways:

  • The increased CO2 and greenhouse gases causing climate change also make food change to be less nutritious
  • Things like having less kids, getting a hybrid, and monitoring how often you use gas can help lower your footprint
  • Countries and people will need to make changes to help reduce the effects of climate change.

“Cutting edge calculations and an ensuing string of studies show how elevated carbon dioxide levels trigger a “junk food effect” in food.”
