With the start of a new year, millions of people across the country are resolving to lead healthier lives in 2016. One of the most effective ways to improve both your mental and physical health is to reduce the amount of stress in your life. While it’s impossible to avoid everyday stressors like work deadlines and difficult commutes, there are other aspects of our lives that we can make less stressful. As this Times Online article points out, you can reduce the amount of stress you place your body under by getting regular exercise. In addition to giving you a physical outlet for the day-to-day anxiety we all live with, adopting a workout routine will nominalize the amount of stress hormones in your body.

The article also highlights the important role maintaining a healthy diet plays in stress management. For instance, when we excess quantities of carbohydrate rich foods like bread and pastries, it has the effect of spiking our blood sugar. The reason being, our digestive system can easily break down those kinds of foods because they lack essential nutrients and quickly convert them into glucose. Consequently, a sudden influx of blue close can imbalance your blood sugar, which makes you feel anxious. Reducing your carb intake will not only lower your risk of contracting type II diabetes, it’ll also make you feel appreciably less stressed.
