How You Can Shorten the Duration of a Winter Cold and Flu

As wintertime approaches, so too does the beginning of cold and flu season. It’s not that there are more cold and flu viruses in the air in the winter, it’s just that they spread more easily because people tend to spend more time together indoors. Even if you’re a huge proponent of hand sanitizer and you make it a point to frequently clean common areas your workplace, there’s still a very good chance you could become infected with a virus that could leave you functioning at less than your best for days or even weeks at a time. That’s why it’s a good idea to give your immune system a boost when the skies turn gray in the temperatures plunge.

While they won’t reduce your risk factor for contracting a cold, doing things like taking a daily vitamin C supplement and getting weekly massage sessions can reduce the severity of your symptoms and shorten the length of time that you are ill. Massages optimize immune system function by relaxing tense muscles, which helps your body flush stress hormones out of your bloodstream. Additionally, one study found that by taking 200 mg of vitamin C a day, you could reduce the duration of your illness by as much as 10 percent.
