Serrapeptase: Beneficial Anti-Inflammatory Enzyme or Just Hype?

November 30, 2018 By Darrell Miller

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme that has been studied since the 1980s for its potential applications in pain and inflammation reduction. Usually synthesized from bacteria found in silkworms, it appears to moderate lymphocyte activity and mitigate debris and fluid buildup. It may be a viable substitute for Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs, which are used endemically but have significant side effects. In addition to its possible uses in treating arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other issues, it may help prevent atherosclerosis and control autoimmune reactions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Since the 1950s, proteolytic enzymes with similarities to serrapeptase have been used to mitigate pain and inflammation.
  • Serrapeptase helps regulate debris and fluid accumulation and limit inflammation and pain resulting from injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions.
  • Serrapeptase can also help kill bacteria, promote fuller healing, suppress atherosclerosis and autoimmune disorders, and provide other benefits.

“Enzyme-based anti-inflammatory drugs are becoming preferred over conventional, chemical-based drugs that reduce pain because they generally have limited side effects.”
