The Dangers of Stress and How to Combat It

September 23, 2022 By Darrell Miller

Stressed out

Everyone experiences stress at some point in their life. Whether it’s from work, school, relationships, or other personal problems, it’s important to find healthy ways to manage your stress. If left unchecked, stress can have serious consequences on your physical and mental health.

Physical Health Effects of Stress

When you’re stressed, your body goes into “fight or flight” mode. This release of adrenaline and cortisol can help you deal with a stressful situation by increasing your heart rate and blood pressure. This is great in the short term, but if you’re constantly under stress, your body never has a chance to return to a normal state. This can lead to serious health problems, such as:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Obesity

Mental Health Effects of Stress

In addition to physical problems, stress can also take a toll on your mental health. Common mental health problems caused by stress include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Sleep disorders

How to Combat Stress

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to combat stress in your life. Here are a few tips:

Identify your triggers – Make a list of the things that trigger your stress. Once you know what they are, you can start to avoid them or come up with coping mechanisms.

Exercise – Exercise is a great way to reduce stress. Not only does it release endorphins that improve your mood, but it also gives you a chance to clear your head.

Eat healthy – When you’re stressed, you may be tempted to comfort yourself with unhealthy foods. However, eating unhealthy foods will only make you feel worse in the long run. Eating healthy foods will give you the energy you need to deal with stressors in your life.

Get enough sleep – Lack of sleep will only make stress worse. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every night so that you can be well-rested and ready to deal with whatever comes your way.

Talk to someone – Sometimes, the best way to deal with stress is to talk to someone about it. Talk to a friend, family member, therapist, or anyone else who will listen and offer support. Just getting things off your chest can help reduce your stress levels significantly.
