According to leading physicians close to a third of people living in the United Kingdom may be infected with a common bacterium called Helicobacter pylori more commonly called H. pylori. Experts maintain that for most of the population this bacterium poses little problem, but for a small fraction it can be debilitating in the form of periodic bloating. The bloating is often similar to inflammation caused by other conditions like period pain and IBS. There are several treatment options for this bacterium and eradication is possible.
Key Takeaways:
- Often people blame constant stomach bloating on their own health but it could be a persistent bacteria, H. Pylori.
- According to physicians more than a third of UK residents have some level of Helicobacter pylori, H. Pylori, in their digestive system.
- Fortunately most people wont have a reaction to H. Pylori but for those that do they can treat it some something called triple therapy.
“A breakthrough came in 1984 when a young gastroenterologist by the name of Barry Marshall offered himself up as a human guinea pig. Barry downed an infectious broth – a petri dish of H. Pylori extracted from the gut of a suffering patient – and effectively gave himself an ulcer and won himself a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2005 in the process.”
