Curcumin found to reduce post-menopausal weight gain by feeding gut bacteria, according to new study

November 1, 2017 By Darrell Miller

Curcumin, found in turmeric, has the highest anti oxidant power of any substance. It’s being studied in cancer treatment and has been known to help a variety of illnesses since Ayuerveda was first practiced. Now it’s been shown to help post menopausal weight in mice. The Chinese researchers measured gut bacteria in the test groups and found an increase in diversity of the intestinal microbiome in curcumin fed mice. Whether post-menopausal or not, curcumin appears to increase the health of the digestive system leading to better weight control.

Key Takeaways:

  • Curcumin, an active ingredient found in Tumeric, has been found to help reduce weight gain in women after menopause.
  • Studies have found that one important benefit of Curcumin is that is can help to reduce inflammation.
  • While the findings in this study are interesting, they do admit that the study was done on only a small group of rats so further research is needed to determine applicability to humans.

“A new study discovers that the active ingredient in turmeric known as curcumin can help reduce weight gain after menopause through feeding gut bacteria, as reported by NutraIngredients-USA.com.”
