How air pollution is damaging your liver

January 15, 2021 By Darrell Miller

When people think about improving their liver health, they consider things like refraining from drinking alcohol, avoiding certain medications, or eating healthier. What many people do not realize is that air pollution has a dramatic effect on someone’s liver health as well. People can get scarring or develop significant liver issues due to air pollution. Studies from Wuhan, China showed that exposure to bad air quality was correlated with individuals having abnormal liver function and problems. Signs of poor liver health can include itchy skin, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting, swelling, and a host of other uncomfortable issues. It is important for people to avoid pollution if they won’t to avoid those symptoms and improve their liver health.

Key Takeaways:

  • Particular matter contains environmental toxins and by-products including road dust, diesel and gasoline exhaust, and even pollutants put off by tires and engine brakes.
  • Additional studies have suggested that exposure to airborne pollutants (most common in urban areas) may increase the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Researchers hypothesize airborne pollutants trigger oxidative stress and inflammation in liver cells and liver tissue.

“Researchers now believe the growing environmental concern of air pollution could be threatening long-term liver health for millions of people, especially city-dwellers.”
