It Is Important To Protect Your Eyes From UV light

September 16, 2016 By Corey B

Many of us are exposed to the sun (ultraviolet radiation) almost every day. Though you realize that UV radiation is not good for the eyes, we may not know how harmful it is. We can see the visible difference on our skin. But when it comes to the eyes, it might not be that visible. You might experience eye redness, tearfulness, and sensitivity, but that will be for a short period – the damage will be much more.

UV rays can affect your eyes from different directions. You can get it directly from the sun, can get the reflection on the ground, snow, water, sand, and from some other bright surfaces. All these rays and reflections can damage your eyes. It can cause skin cancer and serious eye diseases. The reason is that the ultraviolet rays might cause reactions in the eye tissues. Hence, it is always suggested to protect your eyes from UV lights.

How to protect your eyes from UV lights

It is not a difficult process. You can easily protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. There are many ways to protect your eyes from the sun lights.

  • Sunglasses

Sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes from UV rays. These glasses not only protect your eyes from the sun, they will also protect from the dust particles and irritants. But you should not pick any of the sunglasses for your eyes. Instead, take the help of eye specialists to know which sunglasses will suit you more. Sunglasses are available in different colors, designs, and size. You need to choose the one that meets your eye demands and lifestyle. Remember that the sunglasses need to block hundred percent of the ultraviolet rays. Make sure that your sunglass meets the above demands.

  • Hat

A hat can also protect your eyes from UV lights. This is not as effective as sunglasses. If you are looking for a hat to protect your eyes from sunlight, then you should choose the one that not only covers your head but also offers complete protection to your eyes from the sunlight. The advantage of the hat is that it protects your head from the sunlight as well. But make sure that you are getting the right one. Some hats specifically designed for the summer and you can get any of them depending on your preference.

  • Lutein

Lutein can protect your retina from oxidative changes caused by ultraviolet lights. The macula, an essential part of the retina, is responsible for your vision. This area is more sensitive to the ultraviolet light along with the blue lights that can damage your eyes severely. Lutein can protect this damage by filtering the blue lights before it can enter and damage the macula. Lutein is also known as a natural and effective treatment for Macular Degeneration. This disease is one of the major causes of the sightlessness among the elder people. You can get lutein from kale, spinach, sweet corn, broccoli, and peas.

It is important to protect your eyes from ultraviolet lights. Whether through natural sources or dietary supplements, it is a must.
