Magnesium and its role in providing a more restful night sleep

Magnesium, A simple Mineral That does Wonders For Sleep

Magnesium is considered as the best “anti-stress” mineral as well as a natural tranquilizer. According to reports, magnesium serves in relaxing the muscles and calming the nerves which consequently helps in inducing sleep in people. The deficiency of magnesium adversely affects the ability of the motor nerves which are responsible to carry the impulses from human brain to the muscles for sending the correct messages. One of the most common causes of magnesium deficiency is insufficient dietary intake. Sometimes, it may also be possible due to the depletion of the mineral through the urinary excretion caused by emotional and physical factors. It is found that low magnesium levels can even cause the release of some stress hormones especially the nor-epinephrine which is known to increase under stress. Increased stress causes more loss of magnesium from the body.

magnesium supplementsSome people prefer to take magnesium supplements as it is known to decrease the release of cortisol which is a known cause of disrupted sleep. When the magnesium levels are low, the entire system gets out of balance which results in tightening muscles. It is found that magnesium serves to work with calcium in our bodies for helping our muscles to first contract and then relax again. These muscles get contracted with the help of stored calcium. Magnesium is the main mineral which helps them relax. Without adequate levels of magnesium, the muscles tend to lose the ability to relax completely after contraction and as a result of which muscle cramps develop during nighttime which consequently leads to sleep disruption.

Magnesium is known to ease anxiety and relax nerves and muscles which lead to the improvement of an individual’s night sleep.

Are you having trouble sleeping? If so, try magnesium.
