Medical News Today: Eating fruits and vegetables reduces lung disease risk

March 15, 2017 By Darrell Miller

According to recent research, eating a diet that has more fruits an vegetables improves lung health, essentially decreasing the risk of developing serious health problems later on in life. COPD, lung cancer, and high blood pressure are just a few of these health risks. A study was done involving nonsmokers and current smokers, and showed that current smokers decreased their risk of developing COPD by 8% by including more fruits and vegetables into their daily diet. The foods that make the difference are said to be leafy greens, as well as berries and fruits and vegetables high in acidity, like apples and tomatoes. Although this study is said to be exploratory, meaning that no actual conclusions can be made quite yet, the observations are rather astonishing.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fruits and vegetables are well known to be a benefit from the body, this is repeatedly confirmed by current research.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is predicted by the World Health Organization to be one of the leading causes of death by 2030.
  • COPD is primarily a factor of smoking and other risky health behavior, however scientists are finding that reduced consumption of fruits and vegetables could also be a contributing factor.

“Recently, there have been a number of studies demonstrating that consuming fruit and veg might also protect lung health.”
