Experimental study finds the velvet bean to be a promising natural treatment for depression

Depression often coincides with Parkinson’s disease, and can make the latter worse by accelerating the loss of motor and cognitive skills. The velvet bean, a climbing legume from Asia, may have important potential for fighting depression, and is already used in folk and herbal medicine. A clinical study in mice found that velvet bean performed better in mice than either levodopa or antidepressants, with no risk of the side effects seen with most pharamaceuticals, indicating that it may have the potential to help wean people off drug cocktails.

Key Takeaways:

  • There are many home remedies that people adhere to when they are trying to get over a hump.
  • People do not understand some of the levels of depression that some can fall victim to.
  • If you are able to figure out what you need help with, then do what works for you.

“The levels of dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin in the mice were also assessed. Mice were evaluated in the catalepsy test, forced swim test, rotarod test, and locomotor activity test after being challenged with haloperidol (an antipsychotic medication that can induce catalepsy when taken in large doses).”
