Bromelain

October 29, 2013 By Darrell Miller

What is bromelain

BromelainfruitThis is a proteolytic enzyme (breaks down proteins) which is extracted from all parts of the pineapple though much concentration is found in the stem. The enzyme works by digesting various types of proteins in either basic or acidic surroundings/medium. The enzyme  plays a key role in reduction of long chain complex protein molecules to simple peptide amino groups beneficial to the body. The ability to breakdown various types of proteins is important in regulating and balance of pH in the body.  Bromelain works maximally at a pH range of 4.5 to 5.5 thus making it best in balancing various pH environments. When there is excessive acidity in the stomach produced  due to poor digestion, the enzyme will help in balancing out the pH by neutralizing most of the acids and vice versa. The alkalinity  in the small intestines also tends to shoot abnormally. By balancing the pH, the alkalinity will be reduced thus boosting other processes to take place as required. The process of balancing pH in the body especially in the stomach is important in the following ways.

Other benefits

A number of disorders such as arthritis, surgical procedures/operations and injuries which may result from diseases are known to cause a lot of inflammation and pain. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory properties which go a long way in relieving the pain and any swelling resulting from the injuries and arthritis.
