Not all fats are bad for you – learn which ones you should include in your diet

March 25, 2019 By Darrell Miller

Although fat has a negative connotation in our popular culture, not all fats are bad for you. There are four different kinds of fat. Trans fat is very bad for you and is banned in the United States. Saturated fat is also not good for you. It is found in red meat and other animal products. Although it is not as bad for you as trans fats it still can result in high cholesterol. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are both good for you.

Key Takeaways:

  • While all types of fats consist of carbon and hydrogen chains, they differ in the length of the carbon chains.
  • The exact shape of the carbon chain and the specific number of hydrogen atoms also serve to make fats different from one another.
  • Trans fats, which occur when healthy oils turn into solids, are the least recommended form of fat for dietary consumption, with no safe level recommended.

“There are four kinds of fats, and you actually need some of them to maintain your overall wellness.”
