The responsibility of liver in regulation of thyroid function

September 23, 2016 By Corey B

The thyroid gland produces two major hormones which are, thyroxine (T4)and triiodothyronine (T3).These hormones aid to control your metabolic rate. They also have an impact on maintenance of normal body temperature and your energy levels regulation.

Thyroxine is an inactive thyroid hormone which must be converted into triiodothyronine in your body to function well. Majority of this conversion rarely occurs in the gland. A large amount of T4 to T3 conversion takes place in your liver, muscles, and kidneys. The conversion will not be useful if your liver is fat or sluggish. This can result in a feeling of tiredness, dry skin and thinning scalp hair, depressed, overweight and puffiness. In other words thyroid problem caused by a faulty liver.

When you take thyroid hormone medication in the form of thyroxine, the conversation must take place to an active form in your body. You can only blame your liver if your medication is not working. Work on improving the health of your liver for healthy hormone levels.

How to keep your thyroid gland health

  • Enrich your diet with adequate iodine. Iodine deficiency has become an increasingly common problem. Note that for the thyroid gland requires iodine to manufacture hormones T4 and T3. You can obtain Iodine in seafood and seaweed. Visit your doctor for a urine test to determine your body’s iodine level.
  • Include adequate selenium in your daily diet. People using thyroid hormone replacement such as Oroxine and Synthroid are obtained from selenium supplementation. This enables their bodies to utilize the medication effectively. Selenium boosts immunity and production of autoantibodies immune. You can also obtain selenium from Brazil nuts.

  • Eat quality protein. Thyroid hormone production requires amino acids. When you experience irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn and bloating, it indicates that your protein is not well digested.
