What to Blame for Your Stomach Bug? Not Always the Last Thing You Ate

July 1, 2017 By Darrell Miller

When experiencing a stomach bug, people tend to blame the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea on something they last ate. It’s possible to get a bacteria or virus infection especially if symptoms occur 4-6 hours after eating contaminated food. Fast food restraints and juice bars are major culprits also poor hand washing on your part can cause you to contaminate food when you touch it. Some GI issues come from medication, poor food choices and stress. Your insides can tell you something is wrong, trust your gut.

Key Takeaways:

  • It is not usually the last thing a person eats that results in a stomach bug; it is usually the food BEFORE the last thing he or she ate.
  • Leafy greens, other vegetables, shellfish, and foods left out for long periods of time are most likely to cause stomach illnesses.
  • All it takes is one little speck of contamination to result in a stomach ailment. Washing one’s hands can prevent this.

“Most food-borne illnesses are caused by viruses or bacteria, such as norovirus, Staphylococcus aureus, campylobacter, salmonella, E. coli and Bacillus cereus.”
