Foods That Hurt and Help Your Teeth

It’s common knowledge that if you want to keep your teeth healthy and strong, you should brush twice a day, floss often and use a nonabrasive mouthwash. The kinds of food we eat also have a significant impact on our dental health. For example, it’s well-known that the tannic acid in coffee can break down tooth enamel and that drinking vitamin D suffused milk on a regular basis will help keep your bones and teeth strong. But, did you know that pickles are actually bad for your teeth or that one artificial sweetener can actually help prevent cavities?

A recent article in the Detroit Free Press took an eye-opening look at how certain foods can affect our teeth and there were more than a few surprises on the list. As it turns out, pickles are bad for dental health because the vinegar and sugar used in the pickling process have properties that break down enamel. Additionally, a common artificial sweetener called Xylitol, which is used in some kinds of sugar-free gum, has been found to have reduced the development of cavities while also remineralizing tooth enamel.
