There’s a lot of talk going around about how bad carbohydrates are for you. But, the reality of the situation is a little more complicated than some might have you believe. When consumed in moderation, carbs found in whole grains, such as oats, quinoa and brown rice are good for you. These are good carbs that provide the body with much needed nutrients like fiber, iron, B vitamins, and selenium. The problem is bad carbs, found in foods made with sugars and refined grains that have been stripped of bran, endosperm and germ.
What we term junk foods are generally heavy in bad carbs. Some examples include sodas made with high-fructose corn syrup, candy made with sucrose and foods made with refined wheat, like white bread and pizza. As they lack fiber and are easy to digest, bad carb foods aren’t as filling as their more nutritious counterparts. The unfilled feeling that comes with eating these foods can lead to overeating, which can in turn lead to obesity. Some studies have found that excess consumption of foods packed with bad carbs can increase your risk of contracting type-2 diabetes.
