Studies concerning olive oil have shown that one of the primary ingredients of the oil, oleic acid, a fatty acid, prevents cancer-causing genes from being able to function in cells. Though it is unknown whether this nutrient can prevent brain cancer, the results of this research to encourage further studies into possible therapies that might make use of oleic acid and fatty acids and their use in preventing cancer.
At the root of oleic acid’s success in the prevention of cancer is miR-7. MiR-7 is a cell molecule whose production can be stimulated and protected by oleic acid. Protected, primarily, from MSI2 which can stop its production. By supporting miR-7’s production, oleic acid can prevent the formation of tumors. At this point, the current results were formulated on lab samples of living cells and human cell extracts.
