Social psychology suggests that people tend to enjoy big events in large groups as opposed to individually. This is a result of being able to feed off of the excitement levels and intensity of others. Whether or not you know them personally or share the same common interests is irrelevant. It is more about having a type of connection with others who share a similar purpose for being there. It is a way of sharing common ground with complete strangers.
