Recent studies with laboratory animal cells have shown that common household dust contains substances that cause fat cells to mature and divide. The reason is that the dust contains chemicals that are known to be hormone disrupters and obesogens. These substances are in our homes in much greater amounts than they were a century ago, and they include phthalates, fungicides, flame retardants, and plasticizers. We are urged to avoid using products which contain these substances, since tiny particles will be shed and become part of the dust we breath and swallow. We should use a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner, and empty it outside. We also must urge our lawmakers to make more stringent, protective laws preventing the use of these substances.
