A study that was published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine has discovered that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of maoberry makes it suitable for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The study that was carried out in Thailand used rats that were fed a high fat diet and it sought to understand the effects of maoberry which is rich in antioxidants on oxidative stress and inflammation in rat cardiac tissues. It was reasoned that preventing the progress of cardiac tissue deterioration could help in preventing cardiovascular diseases while eating food high in fat could hasten it. The rats were then fed maoberry extracts or as a control, simvastatin, a lipid lowering drug, for 12 weeks. In conclusion, it was found that the maoberry extract were significant in reducing the expression of genes involved in inflammation and reduced oxidative stress.
Key Takeaways:
- It was discovered from a study conducted in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine that maoberry contains both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- The research team that came from Thailand tested maoberry extracts on rats fed with a high-fat diet in order to understand its effect on oxidative stress.
- When one consumes food that is high in fat, he has a higher risk of getting a cardiovascular disease and preventing tissue deterioration could improve the situation.
“The treatment with maoberry extract significantly reduced oxidative stress and increased antioxidant capacity in cardiac tissues of the rats.”
