One of the most difficult aspects of sticking to a healthy diet is avoiding foods that are seemingly healthy, but in actuality serve to undermine your fitness goals. For example, Coconut milk is commonly touted as a healthy beverage because it is rich in fiber, vitamins C, E and B complex, iron and magnesium without containing lactose. However, coconut milk is incredibly high in calories and fat, with one cup of coconut milk containing 445 calories and 45 grams of fat. That means by drinking one coconut milk smoothie, you’ve consumed 74 percent of your daily recommended intake of fat.
Another food that is deceptively full of fat and calories is walnuts. While they taste great, can help balance your cholesterol levels and are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, one ounce of walnuts contains 185 calories and 18 grams of fat. That means by eating a few handfuls of walnuts, you’ll be consuming more calories and more fat than there are in a Big Mac. It’s also a good idea to go easy on granola, even though it has long been touted as being very healthful. While granola has properties that help prevent against cancer and heart disease, it also has 100 calories and 17 grams of fat per ¼ cup.
