Acetyl-L-Carnitine: Health Benefits

For many years, successful athletes around the world have used acetyl-l-carnitine as a performance enhancing supplement. It is a safe and highly effective supplement that helps them perform at higher intensity and expedites the recuperation process of the muscles. However, everyone can consume acetyl-l-carnitine and enjoy its health benefits. It can be particularly helpful to elderly people facing degeneration in muscle endurance, strength and cognitive function.

Health Benefits

Acetyl-l-carnitine has been seen to alleviate the symptoms of dementia. A study performed on a group of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (the neurological condition that interferes with a person’s motor functions and sense of self), showed that those who consumed the supplements had lesser symptoms than those who did not.

For patients who suffer from hepatic encephalopathy (when the liver loses its ability to breakdown fat or eliminate toxic substances from the blood), acetyl-l-carnitine can help to restore this function. Hence, it can assist in weight loss management and detoxification of the body.

Different studies have also shown that the supplement may be effective in boosting sperm function. In addition, it can be used to treat a Peyronie’s disease, a condition that affects the penis.

A genetic condition known as fragile X syndrome can lead to behavioral disturbances such as autism, mental retardation and hyperactivity. A preliminary study has established that consumption of acetyl-l-carnitine helps to reduce the hyperactive behavior related to this condition.

How it works to Increase Energy Levels

As you grow older, the body loses its ability to produce the essential amino acid L-carnitine, which plays a vital role in the production of energy by converting fat into energy. If your body lacks sufficient L-carnitine, you will experience symptoms such as weakness, fatigue and shortness of breath. Taking acetyl-l-acarnitine supplements can therefore restore the natural production of energy in the body. Once the muscles are supplied with sufficient amounts of this supplement, it helps to reduce the accumulation of lactic acid which causes fatigue. This is why bodybuilders use it to enhance their performance in the gym.
