An Amish man has been convicted to six years in prison for making herbal remedies that were not labelled appropriately and for obstructing a federal agency.
Although convicted and sentenced in 2017, his troubles with the the Food and Drug Administration began in 2013. That year, he was ordered by a federal court to stop distributing his remedies until the FDA could inspect his operations. When trying to gain access to his farm, the FDA was stopped by Girod and his compatriots and barred entry.
Girod defended himself on two fronts. First, his remedies were herbal, not drugs, so not under FDA regulation. Secondly, requiring FDA approval was against his faith, the Old Order Amish faith.
