Researchers at the University of Texas Health Center has discovered a way to boost insulin cells in the pancreas of mice. The next stage would be to test on larger animals with human trials possibly 3 years away. This could cure type 1 diabetes and get rid of the need for insulin shots in type 2 diabetes. The technique uses a virus that delivers gene therapy to the pancreas, the treatment has not exhibited any side effects . There is a current US patent filed for the process by the research team.
