Different forms of Vitamin B9

September 9, 2016 By Corey B

Arguments are going on among the experts about the benefits of the folate and folic acid. When some find it similar, other take them as two different vitamins. But in reality, they are two different forms of Vitamin B9. Though there are many differences between these two, they are often used interchangeably. Remember that these two are not same and they have different impacts on the human body.

Vitamin B9, Folic Acid, and the Folate

Vitamin B9 is an important nutrient that is required for several functions of the human body. It plays an important role in the formation of the DNA and the in the cell growth. Without the proper amount of folate, you can experience some serious health complications such as the birth defects, cancer, and the heart disease. And the problem is that you cannot get it in supplements as it occurs naturally in the food. It is only available in leafy foods, vegetables, and nuts. If you take the supplements, then you will get enough folic acid that is also important for the growth and development human body. As both nutrients are different forms of Vitamin B9, it can also help you control Vitamin B9 deficiency.

Folic acid can be found in food products, processed foods, and in cereals. You can also take supplements. Another thing is that folic acid will not be converted into Vitamin B9 directly. Instead, it will be converted in your liver and other tissues. And the process will be slow. Hence, experts always suggest taking folate instead of the folic acid to meet the vitamin B9 deficiency. Methyl folate is healthier and more effective than folic acid. While folic is synthetic, folate occurs naturally in some vegetables and leafy foods. The absorption will be faster and more effective.
