What Herbs Increase Mothers Milk?

February 6, 2016 By Corey B

The utilization of certain plants is as old as mankind itself. From the moment we developed into the thinking, sentient beings that we are today, we relied on the natural power of herbs to heal, to develop, to prosper. Their effectiveness goes beyond the often criticized methods of alternative medicine, giving many powerful drugs their main compound. While many of them are dangerous for pregnant women, there are certain types that can be very beneficial, positively impacting lactation and the quality of the mother’s milk itself.

Most common herbs helpful to increase mother’s milk

Fenugreek

Used for such purposes for more than a millennia, fenugreek is one of the most universally liked herbs with several medicinal qualities. A 3500 mg daily dosage is considered to be the upper limit of safe intake, but anything below that will likely be extremely beneficial. This herb goes to work very quickly, a noticeable difference can be present within 24 hours.

Milk Thistle

This herb is known for its liver regenerative qualities, but it has another positive effect as well, which is its ability to stimulate lactation. To top it off, milk thistle positively impacts this process in more than one way. In addition to boosting the lactation process, it also helps the body in removing certain toxins. The end result is increased lactation with improved milk quality.

Indonesian Torbangun

Also known as, the Coleus amboinicus Lour is one interesting herb. As you have probably guessed by its non-Latin name, the Torbangun is mainly used in Indonesia. It is, however, one of the most potent herbs when it comes to positively impacting the lactation process. It is so potent in fact that it can increase milk production by up to 65%, beating out even B12 supplements during some clinical trials. Arguably the strongest, most potent herb of its kind.

Ginger

One of the most commonly used herbs around the world with many proven health benefits, ginger root is considered to be one of the world’s healthiest foods. Its impact on the lactating process comes from two facts. First, it increases the blood flow, allowing the body to perform at a higher level. When that happens, the mammary glands can work at an optimal level. Its other quality that is important regarding the lactating ability of the mother, is its blood cleaning effect, resulting in more nourishing milk.

Turmeric

Turmeric is another one of those “good for everything” type of herbs, and for very good reasons. There are hundreds of FDA approved supplements that rely on its medicinal qualities, offering various health related benefits. It is especially effective when the mother’s breasts have been swollen, reducing the inflammation and restoring blood flow. One of the most commonly used Ayurveda plants, it is not only beneficial for the lactation process, but positively affects the whole body.
