Hibiscus Tea: The Antioxidant ‘Therapeutic Agent’ You Should Be Drinking

November 7, 2017 By Darrell Miller

Hibiscus Tea is an antioxidant powerhouse with many health benefits. According to an article in the Journal of Experimental Pharmacology, the tea is actually considered a therapeutic agent for a number of conditions. Studies show that hibiscus tea can lower blood pressure significantly. This fragrant beverage can also fight free radical damage due to exposure to toxic chemicals and a poor diet. There is even some early evidence to suggest that hibiscus tea has anticancer properties. While this drink is definitely good for you, it can be toxic to the liver in very high doses. Four to eight ounces of tea a day seems to be a safe amount to consume without side effects.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to an article in the Journal of Experimental Pharmacology, Hibiscus tea is a therapeutic agent for many health conditions because it has a large amount of beneficial antioxidants.
  • Hibiscus tea can lower high blood pressure, supports healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and is helpful in maintaining a healthy weight.
  • While very high doses of hibiscus tea can be toxic to the liver, moderate daily intake of the beverage is safe and beneficial.

“Hibiscus tea (sometimes referred to as “sour tea”) is one of those incredible, yummy teas that is high on the list of drinks to keep around the house, like matcha green tea and yerba mate.”
