Medical News Today: Red eyes: List of common causes

March 14, 2017 By Darrell Miller

Red eyes, just by themselves, are nothing to worry about. However, combined with other symptoms, can be a sign of a more serious problem that should be handled by a medical professional. All alone, red eyes signify a lack of oxygen being supplied to your cornea, but if symptoms persist and are not solitary, it could signify something as serious as an ulcer or a hemorrhage. Other indications may be smoking or drinking too much, glaucoma, or a physical injury. Although most treatment is easily available, sometimes a more serious condition can cause these symptoms, and then a visit to a physician may be necessary to get a diagnosis and proper treatment.

Key Takeaways:

  • Red eyes are caused by enlarged blood vessels in the eyes.
  • The blood vessels in the eye become filled with blood when there is not enough oxygen being supplied to the cornea or the tissue covering the eye.
  • No need to worry about red eyes unless accompanied by eye pain, discharge, or impaired vision.

“Red eyes can be the sign of a minor irritation or a serious medical condition such as an infection.”
