Powassan virus which is carried by the deer tick can be deadlier and lead to more permanent disability than Lyme disease, also carried by deer ticks. The disease, leading to death or brain damage was carried by ticks that did not bite humans but now that deer ticks are carriers, human transmission keeps increasing. The majority of infections that are known have been on the east coast and Midwest. The less severe cases may not be known but the outlook for those with severe infections can be grim.
