The Effects of Vitamin B6 Deficiency

January 7, 2016 By Corey B

We all know that vitamin deficiency can have a significant negative impact on our mental and physical health. If you become deficient in vitamin D, you can expect the persistent feeling of fatigue and joint and muscle pain. If you don’t consume regular amounts of vitamin C, you begin to bruise easily and your immune system will not function optimally. And, if your dietary intake lacks vitamin B6, you will experience problems concentrating and remembering new information, sleeping and maintaining a positive mental outlook. The reason a vitamin B6 deficiency results in those symptoms is because that particular nutrient plays an essential role in the synthesis of the GABA, serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA acts as a nerve inhibitor. Without it, you’d become mentally and physically overwhelmed by different sensations and you’d be unable to think coherently or create new memories. Without the proper amount of serotonin in your bloodstream, your moods will be thrown out of whack and you’ll find yourself feeling depressed and pessimistic for no particular reason. And if you become deficient in dopamine, you’ll become increasingly apathetic about the world around you and chronically fatigued. For those reasons, it’s extremely important that you get enough vitamin B6, and even if through the consumption of vitamin B6 rich foods like kale or a vitamin supplement.
