Why Certain Foods Make You Feel Bloated

September 17, 2015 By Corey B

Have you ever eaten a nominally portioned meal only to feeling bloated and tired afterward? That feeling is caused by the problems your digestive system is having breaking down certain foods. For example, eating baked beans, which are a great source of fiber and protein, may cause some individuals to feel bloated because their stomachs can’t break down a sugar molecule called oligosaccharide. Consequently, the beans are sent to the large intestine, where they can be digested with the different kinds of bacteria. This process leads to the creation of gases that make you feel physically bloated, and for those with irritable bowel syndrome, it can induce symptoms like cramping and flatulence.

So, what do you do if you love baked beans, but you dislike the bloated feeling that comes with eating them? Well, one option is eat beans that are easier to digest than the navy beans commonly used in the popular convenience food, such pinto or black beans. Alternately, you could replace baked beans with equally tasty sides, like quinoa, which is rich in protein and gluten-fee. Also, sweet potatoes have a sweetness that is similar to bakes beans while being much easier to digest. And, sweet potatoes are great sources of fiber, beta carotene and niacin.
